Agones

Agones, the name given to the national games that were such important institutions in ancient Greece. The word is etymologically connected with the Greek agora, and signified primarily "an assemblage." There were four of these great gymnastic and equestrian contests: the Olympian, the Pythian, the Nemean, and the Isthmian games.
