Amanita

Amanita, one of the sub-genera of Agaricus, characterised by having white spores and an outer covering or volva (velum universale) which bursts, leaving a torn cup round the bulbous base of the stalk and flaky scales on the top (pileus) of the fungus, generally in addition to the inner veil (velum partiale) below the gills. A. musearia, the Fly Agaric, used as a fly-poison, is bright scarlet with scattered white flakes on its pileus. Some species are edible.
