Ariovistus

Ariovistus, the chief of the Suevi (Swabians), entered Gaul at the invitation of the Sequani about 63 B.C. to help that tribe against the AEdui, whom he defeated. He was so well pleased with the country that he settled down and began to become troublesome to his allies. Julius Caesar came to their rescue, overthrew Ariovistus at Vesontio (Besancon) B.C. 58, and drove him back across the Rhine.
