Azimgahr

Azimgahr, a district and city in the Benares division of British India, under the rule of the lieutenant-governor of the North-West Provinces. The area of the district is 2,147 square miles. The soil is fertile and highly cultivated, producing large crops of rice, sugar, and indigo. Cotton and silk are manufactured. The Gogra gives water communication with Bengal. The city, which is about 80 miles N.E. of Benares, stands on the Tons river, a tributary of the Ganges. It was founded in 1665 by a local landowner.
