Bairaktar

Bairaktar, or Beirakdar, Mustapha, Pacha, born in 1755, distinguished himself in the Turkish army and in 1806, as pacha of Rustchuk, opposed the invasion of the Russians, who had seized Bucharest. At this juncture the Janissaries rose against Selim III., and put in his place Mustapha IV., who strangled Selim. Bairaktar, concluding a hasty armistice with Russia, marched to Constantinople, deposed and strangled Mustapha (1808), and set up Mahmoud II. He died in the same year.
