Caesar

Caesar, the name of a family of the Julian gens, which claimed, as Virgil tells us, to be descended from Iulus, the son of AEneas. Although not strictly appertaining to the emperors later than Nero, it was adopted as part of the imperial title, and from the time of Hadrian became the distinctive title both in the Eastern and Western empires of the heir-apparent. The title still exists in the names of the Czar of Russia, the German Kaiser, and the British Kaiser-i-Hind.
