Cahete

Cahete, a general name meaning dense forest, applied collectively to several Brazilian tribes of the province of Parahiba, who formerly lived in the remote woodlands to escape the attacks of the Indians occupying the open plains. Most of them have been exterminated by the Tupinambas of Para and Maranhao, and the survivors have now become mansos, i.e. civilised, occupying fixed settlements in the southern districts of Parahiba.
