Caiapo

Caiapo, a fierce Brazilian nation, at one time powerful in the provinces of Goyaz, Sao Paulo, and Minas Geraes. Many still survive in the woods and along the banks of the rivers, especially in Goyaz, but are much less ferocious than formerly. A few have even adopted civilised ways, though all attempts have hitherto failed to induce the bulk of the nation to lead settled lives. Even the young of both sexes captured and brought up in the neighbouring towns almost invariably take to the woods on the first opportunity. They go naked, dwelling in frail habitations of foliage, and armed with the bow and arrow and a massive club, used both in battle and the chase.
