Candle Fish

Candle Fish (Thaleichthys pacificus), a fish so closely allied to the Smelt (q.v.) as to be sometimes placed in the same genus with the name Osmerus thaleichthys. It is a native of the American side of the Pacific, and is so exceedingly fat that, according to Gunther, "it is equally used as food and as candle."
