Catrail

Catrail, The, a remarkable earthwork which begins at the river Gala, about a mile from Galashiels, and extends to Peel Fell, Northumberland, a distance of 50 miles. It is also known as "The Devil's Dyke" and "The Picts' Work Ditch." Consisting of an excavation, with a wall or bank on either side formed of the excavated materials, it resembles similar Keltic works in various parts of the kingdom. Various theories have been propounded as to its origin, since attention was first called to its existence by Gordon's Itinerarium Septentrionale in 1726.
