Colcothar

Colcothar is the residue obtained when ferrous sulphate or copperas is heated for the production of fuming sulphuric acid. It consists of red oxide of iron (Fe2O3), and is employed for polishing stones, etc., and a pigment. It is also known by the name of caput mortuum.
