Comenius

Comenius, John Amos (1592-1671), an educational reformer of Moravia. Educated at Herborn and Heidelberg, he became a wanderer, but settled for a time at Lissa, in Poland. He was invited to England to superintend education, but the Civil war drew attention to graver matters, and he went to Sweden in 1641 at the invitation of the Chancellor Oxenstiern. He went back to Lissa in 1648, from there to Hungary, and then to Amsterdam, where his books were published (1657). Besides his Didactica Magna, Janua Linguarum reserata, Vestibulum, he wrote a kind of Cyclopaedia, and is said to have edited the first Children's Picture Book.
