Concordat

Concordat (Lat. concordatum, a thing agreed apon) may mean any kind of convention or modus Vivendi, but is more commonly used to signify the compact, made in countries where Catholicism is the prevailing religion, between the Pope and the civil authorities, and having for its object the securing of their respective rights. Theologians have differed as to the exact nature and the binding force of the concordat. The most notable concordat is perhaps that concluded in 1801 between Pius VII. and Napoleon, then First Consul.
