Dalberg

Dalberg, the name of an ancient noble German family, which has produced many men of historical note, and whose chief was the hereditary chamberlain of the Archbishop of Worms. A Dalberg, Archbishop of Cologne, crowned Henry II. in 1002. The male branch came to an end in the 12th century, but the heiress Margaret gave the name to her husband, and founded a new branch. Among princes, poets, and statesmen, one of the most noted members was Charles Theodore (1744-1817), who was Archbishop of Mainz, arch-chancellor of the Empire, prince-primate of the Confederation of the Rhine, and Grand-Duke of Frankfort.
