Deflection

Deflection, generally, means a change of direction. Thus, in navigation it means the change of course of a vessel; in optics, the change of course of rays of light. Many measuring instruments record their readings by deflection of a needle or pointer, the magnitude of the deflection being a measure of the cause of disurbance and also a measure of the sensitiveness of the instrument.
