Dobereiners Damp

Dobereiner's Damp, which takes its name from that of its inventor, depends for its action upon the fact that if a jet of hydrogen be allowed to impinge, in air, upon spongy platinum, the gas ignites and the metal is heated to incandescence. The lamp simply consists of an arrangement by which a supply of hydrogen can be readily obtained, the nozzle through which the gas issues being directed upon a support which holds the platinum sponge.
