Erlangen

Erlangen, a Bavarian town in a plain, 10 miles N.W. of Nurnberg, almost rebuilt in the early part of the 18th century after being almost destroyed by fire. It is square, with streets at right angles, and has seven gates. French refugees settled here in the 17th century, and gave a great impetus to the manufactures, and there are several breweries. It has three important churches, an old castle, a stadthaus, a theatre, and a university, and there are good gardens and walks in the suburbs.
