Grog

Grog, in the navy, a mixture of spirit and water, served out in that form to prevent intoxication. The proportion, if the spirit be rum, is usually two parts of water to one of rum. Grog probably takes its name from Admiral Vernon, who introduced the practice of mixing, and who was known in the service as "Old Grogram."
