Hancock

Hancock, Winfield Scott (1824-1886), American general, was born in Pennsylvania. After serving in the Mexican and other campaigns, he joined the army of the Potomac under McClellan on the outbreak of the Civil War, and distinguished himself in the battle of Fredericksburg (1862). At Gettysburg, where he commanded the second army corns, he received a wound which disabled him for a time, but he again led the same division in the Wilderness campaign of May and June, 1864. In 1880 he was nominated Democratic candidate for the Presidency, but was unsuccessful.
