Hope Thomas

Hope, Thomas (1770 7-1831), a celebrated traveller and virtuoso, author of Household Furniture (1805) and other works of the same kind. His chief contribution to literature, however, was a romance entitled Anastatius: or, Memoirs of a Modern Greek (1819), which at the time of its appearance was supposed to be the work of Lord Byron. His son, Alexander James Beresfobd Hope (1820-87), a zealous defenderof Church institutions and chief founder of St. Augustine's Missionary College, Canterbury, was Conservative member for Cambridge University from 1868 to 1887.
