Hughes_1

Hughes, Thomas, born 1823, an English Q.C. and County Court Judge (1882), once Liberal member for Lambeth, is better known to most as the author of Tom Broivn's School Days, and Tom Brown at Oxford, and The Scouring of the White Horse. Both in Parliament and out of it Mr. Hughes made himself the advocate of many schemes for the advancement of the well-being of the working classes, and he was one of the earliest promoters of the principle of co-operation in conjunction with Kingsley and F. D. Maurice. He died in 1896.
