Janina

Janina, Joannina, the largest town in a district of the same name forming the central portion of Albania, stands picturesquely on the western shore of a lake about fifty miles northeast of Corfu. At the beginning of the century it was a large town, the residence of Ali Pasha; but the fortress is now in ruins. The town has been Turkish for nearly five centuries, but the bulk of the population are Greeks. The place has long been famous for its manufacture of gold lace.
