Mangoldwurzel

Mangold-wurzel, a variety of beet (q.v.), Beta vulgaris macrorhiza, largely grown as food for cattle, being almost as nutritious as swedes (q.v.), and not, like them, liable to the attacks of the turnip beetle. It flourishes on the light soils of our southern counties, where it is too hot and dry for the turnip.
