Marathon

Marathon, perhaps identical with the modern Marathona, was a small town in a plain to the north-east of Athens, between the mountains and the sea. In history it is famous as the scene of the victory of Miltiades over the Persians in 490 B.C.; in mythology as the scene of the earliest worship of Apollo, and of several incidents in the Heraclean and Theseid legends.
