Melville Andrew

Melville, Andrew, was born near Montrose in 1545, educated at St. Andrews, and sent to Paris to complete his studies. Thence he passed to Geneva, where he obtained a professorship. In 1574 he returned to Scotland, and was elected principal of the university of Glasgow, being transferred six years later to St. Mary's College, St. Andrews. He was imprisoned first in the house of the Bishop of London, and then in the Tower, his offence having been a violent attack on the Archbishop of Canterbury at the time of the Hampton Court Conference. In 1611 he was released, but forbidden to return to Scotland. The university of Sedan offered him a professorship, and there he died in 1622.
