Parkman Francis

Parkman, Francis (1823-93), one of the best American historians, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard. He obtained an intimate knowledge of Indian life by living among the Indians in Canada and Dakota, and in 1851 published The Conspiracyof Fontiac. This was followed by other valuable works, such as The Pioneers of France in the New World, La Salle and the Discovery of the Great West (1869), Ttie Old Regime in Canada, and Montcalm and Wolfe (1884), French and German editions of most of which have appeared.
