Puffendorf

Puffendorf, Samuel, Baron von (1632-94), jurist, was a native of Chemnitz. His first work,. The Elements of Universal' Jurisprudence, was written while in prison at Copenhagen, where he was tutor to the sons of the Swedish ambassador. He became professor successively at Heidelberg and Lund, and was afterwards historiographer to the king of Sweden. He died in Berlin, where he was writing the life of the Great Elector of Brandenburg. His chief work was the Be Jure Natures et Gentium (1672).
