Savary

Savary, ANNE JEAN MARIE RENE, DUC DE ROVIGO, was born at Marcq, Ardennes, in 1774, joined the French cavalry in 1790, and at the age of three-and-twenty became a major. He next served under Desaix in Egypt and at Marengo. Napoleon entrusted to him the slaughter of the Duc d'Enghien, and employed him in his negotiations with the Tsar. In the Jena campaign of 1806 he showed great military ability, and his diplomatic success at Madrid in 1807 was no less marked. After Napoleon's fall he wished to accompany him to St. Helena, but was imprisoned and condemned to death. He escaped and wandered for some years, reaching England in 1819. Making peace at last with the Bourbons, he was restored to his rank, and in 1831 commanded the army in Algeria, performing his task with credit. He died in 1833.
