Scribe AUGUSTIN EUGENE (1791-1861), French dramatist, was the son of a silk mercer, and was born at Paris. He gave up the study of law, and began to write plays, of which he produced an enormous number, making a very large fortune by his industry. His most successful pieces were Bertrand et Raton, Le Verre d'Eau, La Camaraderie, and Adrienne Lecouvreur, His first play was produced in 1810, but it was not till 1815 that he achieved a notable success, He wrote many of the libretti for Meyerbeer and Auber's operas. In 1836 he became an Academician.
