Shannon

Shannon, THE, rises in thc Cuileagh Mountain, County Cavan, and after a south-westerly course of 254 miles, empties itself into the Atlantic, between Loop Head and Kerry Head. It forms the boundary between Connaught W. and Leinster and Munster E., flows through Loughs Allen, Baffin, Rea, and Derg; has on its banks the towns of Limerick, Killaloe, and Athlone, and is navigable for about 214 miles, though large vessels cannot get higher than Limerick.
