Stanfield

Stanfield, WILLIAM CLARKSON, R.A. (1793-1867), painter, was the son of Irish parents, and in early life served in the navy, where his taste for drawing was discovered. He met with an accident which incapacitated him for service, and then becama a scene-painter, afterwards exhibiting landscapes and marine subjects, His fame spread quickly, and he was elected an A.R.A. in 1832 and R.A. in 1835. He was one of the best artists of his time, and many of his finest pictures are in the London galleries.
