Tagus

Tagus, the largest river of the Spanish peninsula, rises in the mountainous country between the provinces of Guadalajara and Teruel,and flows first north-west, then south-west past Aranjuez, and with a generally west course past Toledo and Alcantara, and, entering Portugal, turns south-west at Abrantes, and passing by Santarem opens out into the Bay of Lisbon, passing due west to the south of Lisbon, entering the Atlantic ten miles below the city at Entrada do Tejo, after a course of 566 miles. It is navigable for steamers to Santarem, and for small vessels to Abrantes. Most of its tributaries are on the left bank.
