Ulster

Ulster, the most northerly province of Ireland, embraces the counties of Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, Monaghan, and Tyronne, having an area of 8,560 square miles. Settled by the English in 1611, and largely colonized by the Scotch, it is the most commercially prosperous and most Protestant quarter of the island, though the Catholics largely preponderate. Ulster tenant right, by which outgoing occupiers received compensation from their successors, was the basis for legislation in the Irish Land Act of 1870.
